Fun Summer Road Trips From Fort Mill & Rock Hill For Everyone In 2018

One of the great things about living in the Piedmont (Fort Mill, Rock Hill, South Charlotte) is that there are so many great destinations that are perfect for Fort Mill & Rock HIll Summer Road Trips.

Let’s face it, there are not too many places that are within a few hours of such a diverse and beautiful region. From the beach, to the Sandhills and the Mountains. Young to old there is something on this list for everyone!

Here is my suggestion for the TWO Summer Road Trips from Fort Mill/Rock Hill that WILL NOT disappoint:

(Part 1 of 2) South Carolina boasts 47 State Parks that are your key to unlocking the vast natural wonders South Carolina have.

Many folks that live in the Fort Mill and Rock Hill area are transplants, and have never really explored the varieties of great family recreation and adventure. The South Carolina State Park System is a FANTASTIC place to start.

LOW COUNTRY / COASTAL OPTION

Charles Towne Landing – Visiting Charles Towne Landing is a double bonus because you have to go to Charleston, SC to get there…darn! Don’t you just hate having to visit Charleston? If you haven’t been there YOU M-U-S-T GO and spend some time…but I digress.

Charles Towne Landing is about a 3 hour (189 Miles) road trip from Fort Mill and a little less from Rock Hill. It is set on the marshy point just off the Ashely River and is a family fun destination.

It is a Historic Site and is the birth place of the Carolina Colony. You will find yourself going back in time to the late 1600’s and experience what life was like as you follow the self guided history train.

It’s literally a 12 Acre Living Museum.

The BEST part is that the kids (my boys LOVE LOVE LOVE going here) can set sail on Charleston’s only 17-th century replica sailing ship. They can see the cannons fired and get a feel for what it’s like sailing on the open seas.

Another special feature of Charles Town Landing that checks all the boxes for family fun and make the road trip worth it is the FREE (yes, I said free) Natural Habitat Zoo. You can meander the scenic and quiet habitat of bears, bison, otters and more. We literally spend an hour just playing with the otters…they have so much personality. The boys will forever have etched in their memories the times we have spent with those otters.

So fill up the tank, take that road trip from Fort Mill or Rock Hill and head to Charles Towne Landing State Park. Be sure grab a lunch (there is a very nice Publix right across the street) and have a family picnic at one of several picnic tables and enjoy a full day of family fun at this amazing gem of a State Park.

This could be a long day trip, or a very inexpensive over night…either way, you will not be disappointed!
